Don't Let Broadway's Protected Bike Lanes be Disconnected

Start Date:
07/01/2008 - 00:00
Expiration Date:
08/01/2008 - 00:00
Action Type:
In-Person Outreach

On May 29th Manhattan Community Board 5 unanimously approved a DOT proposal to remove two travel lanes and create a seven-foot wide cycle-track accompanied by pedestrian amenities that encourage sitting and people-watching along Broadway from 42nd Street to 35th Street.

These formerly unremarkable seven blocks will now connect Times Square to Herald Square, and with a bit more work they could connect all the way to the redesigned Madison Square Park and create one of Manhattan's finest public spaces.

Take Action!

Summer bikers will be able to take a free ride around Governors Island.

Starting this Friday, bicycles will be available free of charge every Friday through October 4.

The island has over a mile of car-free roads and views of New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty.

The program is sponsored by Transportation Alternatives, a group promoting better bicycling, walking and public transit in New York City.

The City Transportation Commissioner says the program will test whether bike sharing could work in other parts of the city.

The view from the lens of photographer Mark Weiss's camera is of a treacherous world of cab drivers weaving into bike lanes, of double-parked delivery vehicles, of car doors opening suddenly, of pedestrians wandering blindly and of narrow passageways between trucks. It is the world of the Manhattan bicycle commuter, which Weiss captures on a camera affixed to a bar on his single-gear bike.

There are at least four excellent reasons to write about biking in the city this month.

First, May is National Bike Month, which is an ideal reminder that New York is a great city for cycling. Most of the city is flat, almost all of our trips are short (according to the bike experts at Transportation Alternatives, 95 percent of our commuting, shopping and other trips are less than five miles), and the climate is pretty great for cycling much of the year.
