The year 2007 may prove to be one of the most important years in the storied history of New York City's development. In a future timeline of urban advances, it might be printed in as big a font and as bold a type as 1811--when the grid system was adopted--or 1904--when the I.R.T. subway opened. The text adjacent to 2007 could say something like "the start of livable streets," or "the bike boom begins," or "congestion pricing kicks off." It may turn out that all of those descriptions may suit 2007. The real question is, in hindsight, will they?

Williamsburg Bridge: Shame of the City

What: Rally on the Williamsburg Bridge Bicycle/Pedestrian Path
When: Wednesday, October 18, 6:30 pm
Where: Manhattan entrance at Delancey Street
Why: A call to action against poor conditions on the bridge path

Cyclists and pedestrians, organized by Transportation Alternatives, will light up the Williamsburg bridge with headlights, taillights, and flashlights during a slow walk and bicycle ride, calling on the city to provide better lighting and maintenance and improved security from the NYPD.

Fed-up With Dangerous Conditions:

Thursday, Jan 28 @ 6:30 pm,
Gather on the Bridge pathway on the Manhattan side (at the Grand Ave. entrance)

On January 28th at 6:30 pm, some 40 cyclists and pedestrians will demonstrate to demand better conditions on the Williamsburg Bridge pathway and the swift opening of the new path, which has been delayed since July 1998. The group will light up the bridge path with their own lights (flashlights, bike headlights etc.) to help make crossing the Williamsburg a safe experience instead of a fearsome one.
