No Points for Cyclists
Often cyclists who get
summonses for traffic violations are wrongfully penalized with points on their
driver's license. The points can cause insurance woes and suspension of the
driver's license.
For the record, Section
131.3(b)(7) of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles' Administrative
Code clearly states that no pedestrian or bicycle violation causes a point
value to be assigned to a driver's license. In fact, the code states that no
points are assigned for any violation "not resulting from the operation
of a motor vehicle." However, if you fail to pay a ticket, your license
can be suspended regardless of what the ticket is for.
