Transportation Alternatives has brought Dr. Donald Shoup, the nation's top expert on parking reform, to New York City to help revolutionize dysfunctional curbside parking. Dr. Shoup will begin with a site visit at one of NYC's most chaotic parking districts: Midtown. He will show how under-priced parking is creating traffic congestion, polluting the air and strangling business.

Dr. Shoup supports raising the price of curbside parking to ensure vacancies, which drastically reduces traffic and improves economic activity. Recent Transportation Alternatives studies have shown that cars searching for a parking space comprise up to 45% of traffic in some neighborhoods.

Dr. Shoup will meet with the DOT, NYPD and business leaders to discuss implementing "performance-based" curbside parking, which is already helping to tame Los Angeles' legendary gridlock. He is a professor at UCLA and the author of “The High Cost of Free Parking."
