Transportation Alternatives Statement on City of New York's "Summer Streets"Subtitle
Available for Interview
For the next three Saturdays, a contiguous car-free route will link Central Park to the Brooklyn Bridge, giving New Yorkers a chance to bike, walk, skate and recreate on more than 6 miles of uncongested streets. Organized by Mayor Bloomberg and the City of New York, "Summer Streets" is one of the largest biking and walking events in the nation, and Transportation Alternatives is helping to ensure as many New Yorkers as possible get to be part of this historic event. "Summer Streets will give the City a much-needed break from the din of traffic and a chance to reclaim our most abundant public space—the streets," says Paul Steely White, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives. "For cities around the world, car-free events like Summer Streets have sparked demand for more walkable and bikeable streets." Transportation Alternatives is leading organized bike rides from The Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens to the landmark event. And dozens of T.A. volunteers and staff will be helping New Yorkers find their way along the 90 blocks of car-free streets.
