  • Examples of existing indoor bicycle parking.

"NYMTC is pleased to work with Transportation Alternatives to support bicycling as a mode of travel that is safe as well as economically and environmentally responsible," said Tom Schulze, Executive Director of NYMTC. "This guide will assist commuters who are already using bicycles and will make it easier for others who are considering using bicycling as a commute alternative."

Indoor bicycle parking is an easy and cost-effective way for building owners and managers to satisfy their tenants and provide them with a high level of service. Employers benefit because their workers arrive to work energized. Employees and residential tenants are assured that their bicycles are safe from theft, vandalism and the weather. And, the city benefits from reduced traffic, noise and air pollution.

According to the NYC Department of City Planning, lack of secure bike parking is the primary obstacle to people who want to bicycle to work. Bicycle Parking Solutions aims to help buildings provide indoor bike parking and encourage more New Yorkers to bicycle.

Transportation Alternatives is New York City's advocate for cycling, walking and sensible transportation.

NYMTC is an association of governments and transportation providers, which serves as the metropolitan planning organization designated for New York City, Long Island and the lower Hudson Valley. The Council serves as the collaborative forum to address transportation-related issues from a regional perspective.
