There's been a lot of chatter lately about being post-racial, post-partisan or post-political. What about post-automobile? The pedestrian- and bike-friendly advocates from Transportation Alternatives want New Yorkers to think about what a post-automobile street would look like, and they're doling out a $6,000 prize to the plan that best designs a "complete street" -- one that's first and foremost safe for walkers and cyclists but also accommodates the truck route, cars and public transit. As cities are vying to be the greenest and most "livable" places, they must improve their streets, TA's executive director Paul Steely White said. The competition, announced Wednesday, focuses on Brooklyn's Fourth Avenue and Ninth Street, a dangerous crossing on the edge of Park Slope and Gowanus. Submissions are due by August 18.
