Dear Deputy Mayor Doctoroff,

As a fellow bike commuter, you understand the dangers that bicyclists face everyday.

While our greenways, bridge paths and parks generally allow safe riding (thank you!), getting to and from these wonderful facilities is unacceptably hazardous. For example, on Houston Street, a City-recommended bike route, 81 bicyclists were injured between 2002 and 2004, and two have been killed in 2005 so far.

We can stop the carnage and encourage more people to bicycle.

I strongly encourage you to convene a tiger team of bicycling advocates, the City Department of Transportation, NYPD, Parks Department, Department of City Planning, Department of Design and Construction and the Department of Health to draft and implement an action plan to make bicycling safe in New York City.

Sincerely,
