State Legislature Says "No" to Street Safety.

NO: Assembly says no speed cameras in NYC.

NO: Senate says no increase in number of red light cameras

The NY State Legislature sputtered down to its usual dysfunctional conclusion this week. Though budget negotiations continued, policy legislation was shoved off until next year. As a result, T.A. supported legislative initiatives to permit NYC to to create a pilot speed radar program with 15 cameras and to allow NYC DOT to up its red light locations from 35 to 50 were shelved. The traffic safety bills were supported by the Mayor, DOT and Police and recieved strong editorial support from  Newsday and NY Daily News.

Email Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and let him know you are disappointed that he didn't pass A7355, speed cameras.

T.A. Meets with State DOT and Hudson River Park Trust Over Hudson Path Safety Problems

On July 13, T.A. met with officials from State DOT and Hudson River Park Trust to demand they act quickly to fix critical safety problems on the Hudson River Greenway. T.A. requested the immediate removal of the dangerous and offensive stop signs. Our advocates also called for redesigns and temporary bollards for dangerous motor vehicle crossings, especially at the Tow Pound (pier 76), Circle Line, Port Imperial Ferry and Intrepid. Currently, terrifying near misses between turning cars and path users are common, and reportedly some path users have been struck.

See the Summer T.A. Mag for more. It will be mailed out 7/25.

T.A. Asks Cops to Stop Ticketing Cyclists Riding Outside of Bike Lanes.

In phone discussions, and in a July 9th letter to the police Traffic Control Division, T.A. asked cops to stop harassing cyclists with tickets for not having bells, turning out of the wrong lane or riding outside of the bicycle lane. T.A. has received numerous complaints from cyclists in Midtown about arbitrary and foolish ticketing by bicycle mounted cops. T.A. likens bike lanes to slow lanes on highways -- good for slow cyclists, but dangerous for fast cyclists. In fact, when legally parked, the average SUV's open door leaves cyclists about a foot of room in the 6th Ave. bicycle lane. Police officials were not sympathetic to this argument and appear likely to continue fining otherwise law abiding cyclists if they ride outside of a bike lane.

Transit Authority to Close One in Five Token Booths

Fear of Crime and Stuck Cyclists

The Transit Authority is set to close 129 token booths and eliminate 235 clerks by the end of the year. The agency claims the clerks are unnecessary because of vending machines, and is clearly seeking to save a few million dollars in its multi-billion dollar budget.

In addition to crime fears, subway users with special needs like those using bicycles, strollers and wheelchairs will be especially inconvenienced. Existing booth closings force cyclists to travel one or even several stations beyond their destination - a major problem in bad weather and during mechanical failures.
