Spring 2005, p.16 Safe Streets This was the first of three workshops to re-design 135th Street to make it safer for seniors, the disabled and all street users. After a discussion of general transportation issues a group including ten seniors from the Central Harlem Senior Citizen’s Coalition, Roberta Washington Architects and Transportation Alternatives staff went on a walking tour. The goal of the first workshop was to identify real-world problems on the streets and sidewalks and proposing solutions. The second workshop will illustrate and prioritize solutions. In the final session the group will present the workshop findings to a larger group of seniors and key transportation decision makers and to call for implementation of the identified solutions.
