The DOT Creates "Walk-to-School" Encouragement Program

The City Department of Transportation has hired The Sam Schwartz Company to organize “Walk to School” programs at five demonstration schools that the agency will choose from the 135 locations targeted for safety improvements. At these five schools, the DOT will meet with parents and school officials to develop programs to make walking safer and more appealing to children. This Walk to School program is federally funded with $281,250.

In the Bronx, T.A. organized “Walk to School Days” in the late 1990s to draw attention to The Bronx Safe Routes to School program. Walk to School programs are also sponsored nationally by the Centers for Disease Control as part of their efforts to reduce obesity by encouraging kids to be more active.
