The DOT Must Replace
Hazardous Williamsburg Bridge Bumps
The 26 metal bumps that cover
expansion joints on the Williamsburg Bridge path are serious hazards to the
3,000 bicyclists and pedestrians who cross the bridge each day. They have caused
numerous cyclists to lose control and crash and many pedestrians to trip. The
City Department of Transportation should replace these dangerous hazards with
the State DOT’s inexpensive “Armorless Bridge Joint System,” which fills in the
expansion joints with elastomers—blocks of rubber that can compress and
expand—and provides a smooth path over the expansion joints.
