The DOT Must Replace Hazardous Williamsburg Bridge Bumps

The 26 metal bumps that cover expansion joints on the Williamsburg Bridge path are serious hazards to the 3,000 bicyclists and pedestrians who cross the bridge each day. They have caused numerous cyclists to lose control and crash and many pedestrians to trip. The City Department of Transportation should replace these dangerous hazards with the State DOT’s inexpensive “Armorless Bridge Joint System,” which fills in the expansion joints with elastomers—blocks of rubber that can compress and expand—and provides a smooth path over the expansion joints.
