In aiming to "reduce private auto use" and grant New Yorkers greener transportation options through collaborations with communities, the DOT's new Strategic Plan represents a long overdue departure from decades of top-down planning and car-centric priorities.

May, in case you didn't know, is Bike Month, but five weeks of cycling-related events already started last week and even included a blessing of the bikes at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine with holy water.

On an average day, 112,000 New Yorkers bicycle—up 10 percent over the past 10 years and up 50 percent in the past two decades. (Those figures are less impressive once you take into account New York's population growth during the same period).
