There's a strange dichotomy facing bicycling in San Francisco, and it's spelled out in the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency's "2007 Citywide Bicycle Counts Report," which features a cover photo of Mayor Gavin Newsom and me pedaling up Market Street together on Bike to Work Day two years ago.

This is National Bike-To-Work Week.

We have our own Bike Month activities here in NYC, serving up every counterculture taste from a bicycle film series to classes on how to draw bikes to a group ride for folding bicycles. Over 100 people showed up for the latter, almost three times the number who came last year. Biking is big in New York, and by all accounts it's getting bigger, as the city, driven (so to speak) by bike-friendly Mayor Bloomberg tries to remold the city for two wheelers.

It's All About the Bike

May, in case you didn't know, is Bike Month, but five weeks of cycling-related events already started last week and even included a blessing of the bikes at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine with holy water.

On an average day, 112,000 New Yorkers bicycle—up 10 percent over the past 10 years and up 50 percent in the past two decades. (Those figures are less impressive once you take into account New York's population growth during the same period). If you wanted to see the city on two wheels, you can download the various 2008 cycling maps.
