Automated & Passive Enforcement
Speed CamerasManual enforcement of speed limits drains the resources of police departments and is difficult to carry out fairly and effectively. Recently, racial profiling has been uncovered as the basis for ticketing minority motorists at higher rates than white motorists. A better solution already in use in other locations is photo radar, an automated system that fairly and effectively enforces speed limits. Red Light CamerasA system of automated enforcement of red-light-running laws is already in use in New York City and is making the city a safer place to walk, cycle, and drive. T.A. is working to expand this program throughout the city.
Speed HumpsOne of the traffic calming methods that is wildly popular with NYC communities is the speed hump. Speed humps are very effective in reducing speeds on neighborhood streets, contributing to greater quality of life and fewer crashes. Report: Slowing Speeds, Saving Lives: The Case for Automated Speed Cameras in NYC (PDF)Anyone who has ever walked or driven along the Grand Concourse, Queens Boulevard, Flatbush Avenue, or Manhattan avenues knows that deadly speeding is rampant on NYC streets. A 1999 study on Queens Boulevard by the NYC Department of Transportation found that 25% of motorists exceeded 40 mph – 10 mph over the speed limit.
