Central Park is vital to New Yorkers as an oasis amidst the crowded and stressful city. But for many hours of the day, car traffic turns the park's loop drive into an unsafe, hostile, and noisy speedway. Cyclists, runners, skaters and strollers who come to the park seeking a quiet respite must jockey for space in a narrow "recreational lane" only inches away from the traffic they are trying to escape. This past winter, two runners were seriously injured by an out-of-control taxicab. Getting cars out of Central Park isnt a huge or complicated task. Seventy percent of the traffic is made up of cabs and livery cars, whose passengers have easy access to alternative driving routes and to subways and busses. In fact, all the motorists in the park on a typical morning would fill only half of one subway train. But while there are alternative routes for cars, there is no alternative to Central Park. I urge you to support a ban of cars from the loop drive and restore Central Park to its status as our nation's premier urban sanctuary. Sincerely,
